MY NIXEY FAMILY

From Buckinghamshire to Somerset
. . . and Beyond

As I grew up in the Welsh mining town of Abertillery, I knew a little about my Nixey family because of what my father had told me. I knew for example that his father, "Ernest" had been born in Somerset, that his uncle Will had been a policeman in the London area, and that his grandfather Edward had been born in Slough, the son of Joseph who was a Tailor. He’d also told me that we had family in Nottingham and Gloucester, but I’ve yet to find the supposed Gloucester connection. He’d also told me about W. G. Nixey, the inventor of the world renowned Nixey’s Black Lead, but he didn’t seem to know where in our family tree he fitted in. I didn’t know for quite some time though how far spread the family had become until I began tracing my ancestors and their numerous descendants online.

Please note: Inevitably, where newspaper articles have been quoted, names, ages and places are sometimes inaccurate, but the content of the articles used are undoubtedly in connection with specific members of this family. Also, where amounts of money have been included, the online Currency Converter of the National Archives website has been used to give an equivalent value as of 2005.

I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my deepest and sincerest thanks to Judy Lester of Kerrywood Research, London, who gave so much of her personal time in transcribing the newspaper articles and other records, and to my cousin John Branston who has been of great help and encouragement.

If you have any corrections, contributions, or suggestions regarding any part of this website, or if you would just like to say “hello”, then please do eMail me, but please ensure you remove the word “SPAM” from my address before sending your message. I would also very much appreciate it if you could find just a few moments to leave a message in the Guestbook. Thanks very much!
